Things to do at the Baia di Portonovo

Baia di Portonovo

The green of the Conero Park surrounds the Bay of Portonovo, which is known for its pristine environment, the beauty of its beaches, and the blue of the sea. Today I’d like to tell you about Portonovo and the Conero sea that surrounds it. Last summer, we had the opportunity to share this experience.

You can’t help but notice the lone respite near the Adriatic shore in this beautiful location (Monte Conero). As a result, you’ll see why it’s also known as Green Bay. The thick pines of Conero Bay appear to dive into the water because they are so close to the coast.

Stopping in the clearing of a curve, one of several that lead to Portonovo’s plaza, allows you to take in the view. The natural splendor of the area will captivate you. You will be able to view the Mediterranean scrub that meets the pure crystalline waves of the sea with your own eyes.

Although this bay is most known for the Portonovo beaches, there are many other activities to enjoy besides the water (natural hikes, trekking, finding cathedrals, art, and history). In this piece, I’ll tell you all you need to know. Here’s what you can view in Portonovo Bay.

Portonovo beaches

The Bay of Portonovo was formed by a landslide that broke out from Monte Conero in the area known as Pian Grande in ancient times. The pebbles of fallen rock that have crumbled from the mountain itself gleam on the coast, which is constantly polished by the waves of the sea.

We guarantee that you will find yourself in a true paradise in beautiful Conero bay, with colors ranging from azure blue to sage green. You’ll be surrounded by crystal clear waters and stunning scenery!

From the small square of Portonovo, you can explore two sides of the bay. In the morning we took the road to the right and, along a dirt path not suitable for strollers, we reached Bonetti Beach. Very large pebble beach with an equipped area and a free area. The sea is blue and the water is very clear.

To get to Portonovo di Ancona, you’ll have to travel over undulating hills and cultivated fields. A spectacular vista will instantly capture your eyes as you exit the Conero provincial road at the little roundabout going to the bay. You can see the beach of Mezzavalle and Monte Conero from here, in addition to the bay (600 meters).

The huge stones of this beach, which may be reached by a trail that begins behind the Santa Maria Church, are not suitable for sunbathing. There is a sail-shaped rock in front of you from which you can dive.

Trave beach is located north of Mezzavalle beach. It has a unique form, and the beach’s name comes from a one-kilometer-long rock on the water’s surface that begins at the coast. To get there, you must go a short distance down a steep route, arriving at the beach after 45 minutes.

What to see besides the sea

The Bay of Portonovo is more than just water, sun, and leisure, as we said in the opening line. Nature, art, history, and athletics all come together in this location. A winning combination for a holiday to remember. All of these characteristics combine to make this location spectacular and one-of-a-kind.

Baia di Portonovo

You’ll be astonished by an unexpected and little-known cultural component in addition to the natural landscape. This is how it went down for us. We didn’t expect to find that much. One of the greatest specimens of Romanesque art in the Marche area is the church of Santa Maria di Portonovo. It was built in 1034 and has five naves, each with a Byzantine-inspired octagonal dome. Inside, the red terracotta floor contrasts with the white stone structural walls. The view of the sea from this vantage point emphasizes its beauty and contrast of hues even more. It was built close to a Benedictine monastery that was destroyed by a Turkish invasion in 1500. The church was spared damage and rebuilt in the 1980s.

The Napoleonic Fort was constructed about 1810 at Napoleon Bonaparte’s request to guard the southern side of Ancona. It was a continental blockade designed to keep British adversaries from trading in the Adriatic Sea.

Pope Clement XI ordered the watchtower, also known as Torre De Bosis, to be erected for defensive purposes. The poet Adolfo De Bosis bought it at the end of the nineteenth century. Today, a cultural organization has been established. The sentinels could formerly see the entire stretch of water from Portonovo bay to the cliffs of the Due Sorelle beach from the tower’s terrace.

Baia di Portonovo

The Deep Lake lies on the side of the road that leads to the church of Santa Maria di Portonovo, while the Lago Grande is on the side of the Molo. There are many tales on the two lake mirrors put in this natural reserve.

We are confident that if you plan your next vacation in the Conero, the Bay of Portonovo will be one of your must-see destinations.
