2021 is a year in which we all want nothing more than to get back to normal. And that includes traveling, of course! Of course, it’s important that we hold off until it’s really safe. With that in mind, we’ve done some research for you and compiled a list of the 10 safest countries to visit in 2021.
You’ll find the official source for each country below, so make sure to check there as well. In the current pandemic, unfortunately, the situation can change quickly, and we also do not want to take unnecessary risks. Azores, Portugal

In 2021, the Azores are in the green zone, which indicates the safest destinations in the world. The islands are especially safe at the moment, as all people entering the country are tested beforehand and only a few Covid-19 outbreaks have been recorded on the island itself. A total of 26 people have died from Covid-19 in the Azores so far.
What are the safest places to visit?
There are 9 different islands in the Azores, all of which are currently considered safe. There have been a few cases in Sao Miguel recently. However, these are limited to a small part of the island, and case numbers are very low. On all islands, you will find special gastronomy and beautiful nature. The Azores also offer a very rich tradition. If you just want to relax and have some peace and quiet with mother nature, this is the place for you.

Are there any special travel restrictions because of Covid-19?
In the Azores, entry is allowed with the use of a negative Covid-19 test (within the last 72 hours before departure) and an online “Evaluation Questionnaire of Risk and Early Detection – Azores in Security“. There is no quarantine obligation. Also, stores and restaurants are currently open 🙂

Why is Iceland a safe destination to travel to?
Congratulations Iceland – the winner of the Global Peace Index 2020! 🙂
In the meantime, it is also well known worldwide that Iceland is always in the top 5 when it comes to points such as the happiest country or the lowest crime rate in the world. The people in Iceland have also dealt with Covid-19 in an exemplary manner. Tough border controls and quarantine regulations have resulted in the second wave already being overcome. Also, there are 29 deaths associated with Covid-19 so far which is still too much but very good compared to other countries.

Are there any special travel restrictions because of Covid-19?
Currently (since 2 February 2021) only citizens of the EEA and Switzerland are allowed to enter Iceland. Therefore, the entry conditions are relatively simple. You need 2 negative Covid-19 tests (the second one will be done 5 days after your arrival) and you have to be in quarantine for 5 days or prove that you have been infected with Covid-19 recently or have received a vaccination. You must also fill out a pre-registration form before entering the country.

New Zealand
Why is New Zealand a safe destination to travel to?
By this point, you can see that islands are totally trending in 2021. New Zealand has also come through the Covid-19 pandemic comparatively well so far. Almost all countries worldwide are currently in the second or even third wave of the pandemic. After the first wave, New Zealand has managed to keep the number of cases constantly low. Furthermore, according to current statistics, “only” 25 people have died as a result of Corona. In addition, New Zealand, like Iceland of course, is one of the safest travel destinations in the world even apart from Covid-19 and is ranked second in the Global Peace Index.

Are there any special travel restrictions because of Covid-19?
Currently, you need to prepare some things before entering New Zealand. However, you need a negative COVID-19 test and have to stay in quarantine for 14 days after your arrival. For the quarantine, you also need a voucher to prove this at the border.

Why is Canada a safe destination to travel to?
Canada weathered the Covid-19 pandemic better than most other countries and was ranked the safest country in the world by travel insurance company Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection by all age groups surveyed (20 and older). This is certainly related to the fact that Canada is the most sparsely populated country in the Americas, making it less likely for the Coronavirus to spread.

Are there any special travel restrictions because of Covid-19?
Currently, there is an entry ban for Canada (except for Canadian citizens and their immediate family members). In general, travelers over the age of five must present a negative PCR test result, no older than 72 hours, to the airline. In addition, a further PCR test is carried out at Toronto airport and it is obligatory to go into a 14-day quarantine. In advance of your Canada trip, you must also register via the ArriveCAN app or website.

Are there any special travel restrictions because of Covid-19?
Costa Rica basically grants entry for tourist purposes for all nationalities. Before that, you have to fill in a health form “Pase de Salud“. You will also need to provide proof of health insurance that meets the current Costa Rican requirements and covers COVID-19. If you enter by air, no quarantine and no corona test are currently necessary.

Why is Greece a safe destination to travel to?
Greece has been relatively spared within Europe throughout the pandemic and has enabled tourism for the longest time. Even now, it is still one of the safest destinations – although currently with tough restrictions such as a curfew from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. and reduced leisure activities. We are sure that the beautiful Greek islands will soon be well visited again.

Also in Greece, you have to register in advance via an online form (Passenger Locator Form). In addition, you must present a negative Covid-19 test (which must not be older than 72 hours) and according to the current status in a 7-day quarantine. The country is currently in lockdown and only the most important stores are open (08.02.2021).

Why is Egypt a safe destination to travel to?
Egypt really surprised us the most. With amazing frequency, Egypt was repeatedly named as one of the safest and most popular destinations for 2021. Egypt is also much safer than many people think, even besides Corona. If you are looking for some relaxation you should definitely go to Egypt this year.
What are the safest places to visit?
Currently, tourism is only possible within coastal regions. But there you can relax on the beach absolutely carefree and admire the world’s unique culture. Did you know that Egypt is the only country in the world where you can still find one of the 7 original wonders of the world? The Pyramids at Giza. If you love ancient history, you should definitely travel to Egypt at least once in your life! Even during the pandemic, numerous discoveries were made (e.g. over 100 sarcophagi).

Are there any special travel restrictions because of Covid-19?
Currently, only a negative Corona test is required, which must not be older than 72h. Furthermore, you do not have to go to quarantine and can move freely within the coastal regions. You should also apply for a visa online beforehand. There is also no longer a curfew. Restaurants are allowed to be open until 10 o’clock in the evening. The hotels take hygiene concepts very seriously and are therefore only allowed to have 50% occupancy. So more space on the beach 😉

Why is Italy a safe destination to travel to?
Italy was the global epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in its early days, and the elderly Italian population, in particular, suffered greatly. Nevertheless, Italy was one of the first countries to reopen its doors to international visitors in June 2020 and that is what the country is working towards again. Are there any special travel restrictions because of Covid-19?
Italy’s borders have reopened since the end of the winter vacation, allowing some countries to enter. These are divided into lists with different restrictions. Residents of low-risk countries must enter a 14-day period of self-isolation in an accommodation of their choice upon arrival. They are not allowed to use public transportation. Visitors from most European countries must present a negative Covid-19 test result (which is not older than 48 hours) and must notify local health authorities upon arrival. It is best to check the lists on the official Italian government site so that you know the exact restrictions for your country. In addition, there are some rules in the country depending on the region and current infection rates.

Why is Thailand a safe destination to travel to?
Thanks to strict quarantine rules, Thailand has a very low covid case detection rate of 0.1 and is thus considered one of the safest travel destinations in 2021. The country also scores with excellent medical care, so that so far only around 80 deaths have been attributable to corona. This low number compared to the population is certainly also due to the wonderfully sunny weather.
What are the safest places to visit?
Thailand is perfect for touring the green interior and the beautiful sprawling beaches of the numerous Thai islands with a private guide or simply on your own, so the risk of infection there is very low. If you want to be extra careful, you should rather avoid crowds and jostling on the streets of Bangkok. Are there any special travel restrictions because of Covid-19?
To enter Thailand you currently need a special permit, the so-called Certificate of Entry (COE), which can be applied for online via the website of the responsible Thai mission abroad. After arrival, all entrants are subject to a 14-day strict quarantine in a government-approved isolation facility (usually hotels) at their own expense, as well as several Covid-19 tests.

Why is Japan a safe destination to travel to?
Like almost everywhere else in the world, Japan has been hit hard by the pandemic. Nevertheless, unlike some parts of Europe and America, the country managed to keep the extent of the devastation low and also has a relatively low mortality rate for its large population of 126 million people. Health, safety, and high levels of hygiene and cleanliness are taken very seriously in Japan, so for example, Japanese people have also worn masks for many years. These are reasons that allowed the country to avoid a lockdown and make it one of the safest destinations for 2021. Furthermore, just like last year, Japan will do everything it can to host the Summer Olympics and welcome travelers to the country for the occasion. So if you have always planned a trip to Japan, this year is ideal to put your plans into action!

Due to the high standard of hygiene, you can basically travel safely anywhere in Japan. Nevertheless, greater caution is certainly required in Tokyo, as there are simply a lot of locals and tourists on the road and the risk of infection will be greater. Otherwise, Japan offers a couple of great things to avoid the coronavirus. For example, restaurants provide private rooms called “koshitsu” and for more distance on your round trip, the green cars (mostly on the shinkansen) are a good option instead of using trains. Are there any special travel restrictions because of Covid-19?
Currently, there is an entry ban for third-country nationals. In addition, non-Japanese nationals who have been in a high-risk country in the 14 days prior to their planned entry into Japan are not allowed to enter. It is therefore not easy to enter Japan at this time. We hope that this will change soon. If you do make it to Japan, strict quarantine rules also apply.
